Gilmore Girls Revival Review

My mood: Gilmore Girls Revival

Like so many others, I was awake bright and early on November 25th to watch the Gilmore Girls revival. On its face, it was everything I expected, classic Gilmore Girls. All of my favorite Stars Hollow characters were back and I enjoyed just being back in the town and seeing how everyone was doing ten years later. Although I wanted to rush through the episodes to hear the famous “four last words,” I patiently watched each episode, hanging onto every morsel of dialogue. As you may have heard, ten years ago, the original writers – Amy Sherman Palladino and her husband Dan Palladino – left the show prior to the final season and, thus, they were unable  to end the show the way they originally intended. This revival, however, gave them the opportunity to fix that and finally give fans those four words. I will not reveal them here, except to say, they were a shocker and I feel much better with those words now than I would have ten years ago.

As a whole, the show was classic Gilmore Girls and in many ways, I felt like I had returned home. Taylor was back with all of his quirks and an engaging attempt to organize a truly bizarre Stars Hollow musical. I particularly enjoyed Luke’s giving people fake Wi-Fi passwords when they set up their laptops in his diner. Of course Michel with all of his little idiosyncrasies were beyond hilarious. And, one particularly touching relationship was the one between Emily and her maid – it was intriguing. She had spent her whole life firing maids, dismissing them, and shouting at them for being incompetent and yet, as she aged, her maid became the person she could really count upon. The development of her character as she grappled with the death of her husband was truly endearing; as she realized that the previous aspects of her former life were frivolous, she really grew into an independent woman, a true Gilmore Girl.

Yet, there were also more than a few things that were a bit annoying. While I believe Rory’s lack of direction in her 30’s was very appropriate given the economy and world we live in today, she had numerous professional opportunities that she failed to fully capitalize upon – a stark contrast to her younger self. Rory’s back-and-forth with Logan left me with a bit of deja-vu; they did the friends with benefits thing in college and it did not work out well then, so why on earth did they think it would work out after college.  He did ask to marry her at the end of the final season and she said no, she cannot get jealous now that he is marrying someone else. I also did not appreciate the superficiality of Lorelai’s “Wild” adventure. Personally, I do not believe in running from my problems. Do I need to take a step back to re-evaluate, maybe with a weekend getaway? Yes. Do I need to buy $500 worth of camping equipment, fly across the country and embark upon a mountain hike to do that? No.  And, finally, I did not appreciate Luke’s overly passioned confession of love for Lorelai at the end; she truly seems to run their lives and I hoped that he would really step up in their relationship by being more of an equal.

As a true Gilmore Girls fan (I watched every episode when they first aired on the CW back in the day), I truly enjoyed the revival and, if you are a fan, I am sure you will enjoy it too. It provided me with a true Gilmore experience, with the noticeable absence of grandpa – Edward Hermann. No, it was not perfect, however, all of our favorites are back once again and you will enjoy seeing how the quirky town of Stars Hollow has changed (or not changed) in the past ten years.

My style: Red-to-Toe Pattern Mixing

This look has pops of red from head to toe! This shirt was one of my first purchases from Boden and it is still one of my favorites. I love the red London bus print on this classic shirt, maybe because I love all things British. To make the red of the buses really pop, I paired the shirt with my red wool mini skirt from J Crew (updated version this season). I topped the look off with my houndstooth blazer from J Crew (try this one or this one) and of my spiked Christian Louboutin heels (similar style here), which are actually comfortable!
